About the Process

After meeting and agreeing to move forward, we'll protect your IP and assess how to best market it within our network of entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 companies. Your innovation can either be sold or licensed to an established company, commercialized as a startup through the Venture Lab or licensed back to you as its inventor.

  • Tech Transfer develops an IP protection and commercialization strategy for your invention.
  • If suitable, a provisional patent application is filed.
  • Tech Transfer markets the invention to industry partners.
  • Nine months later, a decision is made on converting a provisional patent into a full application.
  • If approved, the full patent application is filed within one year of the provisional filing.
  • Ongoing patent prosecution and industry marketing continue.
  • License the technology to an existing company.
  • Launch a startup through the Venture Lab and license the IP from UC.
